Group Classes or Individual PT? The Pros and Cons
I get asked this a lot, usually by someone who has done a group class before, enjoyed it, but is wondering if they would get more out of one-on-one sessions instead. There is no single right answer, so here is how I would actually think it through.
How they compare
| Factor | Group classes | One-on-one PT |
|---|---|---|
| Cost per session | Lower. Usually the cheapest way to get structured training. | Higher, since the whole session is yours. |
| Attention and form correction | Shared across the room. Corrections are general. | Full attention, every rep. Issues get fixed on the spot. |
| Personalisation | Program is written for the average person in the class. | Built entirely around your goals and starting point. |
| Injuries or health conditions | Hard to accommodate properly in a group setting. | Exercises adjusted for you specifically, safely. |
| Motivation and social side | Training alongside others helps a lot of people show up. | No group energy, but sessions are booked and expected. |
| Speed of progress | Steady, but limited by the pace of the group. | Usually quicker, since nothing is diluted for a group. |
| Scheduling | Fixed class times you need to work around. | Flexible, arranged to suit you. |
How I would decide
If you have an injury, a specific goal, or you have tried group fitness before and felt like it was not quite right for your body, one-on-one is usually the better starting point. If you are generally healthy, motivated by group energy, and mainly looking for consistency and affordability, a good class can absolutely do the job.
Some clients do both, a class for the social side and a session with me to work on something more specific. There is no rule that says you have to pick one.
