What to Expect from Your First Personal Training Session

Almost everyone is a little nervous before their first session, especially if it has been a while since you exercised. Here is exactly how it runs, so there are no surprises.

Before you arrive

We will have already had a quick chat by phone or text about what you are looking for. Wear comfortable clothes you can move in and bring a water bottle. That is genuinely all you need. No forms to fill out in advance, no fitness test to dread.

The first 15 minutes: a conversation

We start by sitting down and talking. I want to understand your goals, your history with exercise, any injuries or health conditions, what you have tried before, and what did or did not work. If you are training for a specific reason, a wedding, a sport, a health scare, an NDIS goal, we talk about that too.

This part matters. A program built without it is just guesswork.

The next 30 minutes: light movement

Then we move. This is not a hard workout and it is not a test. I take you through some basic movement patterns, squatting, hinging, pushing, pulling, carrying, so I can see how you move and where we need to start. We might try a few pieces of equipment. If something hurts or feels wrong, we stop and adjust.

You should leave feeling like you have done something, not like you have been put through the wringer.

At the end: your starting plan

Before you go, I will talk you through what I have seen and what the first few weeks will look like. We sort out scheduling, whether that is one session a week or three, mornings or evenings, and where we train, my home gym in Parkwood or a partner gym nearby.

Common worries, answered

"I'm too unfit to start."

That is exactly what the first session is for. We start where you are.

"I don't want to be shouted at."

I do not train that way. Consistency and small wins beat intensity you cannot sustain.

"What if I can't keep up?"

There is nothing to keep up with. One-on-one means the session moves at your pace.
